Whitmore Heath
Whitmore Heath, formerly Whitmore Common, is situated to the north-east of Baldwins Gate village,
on rising ground overlooking the river Lea Valley which runs broadly north westwards to Madeley. This
elevated position provides particularly pleasing rural views in all directions. The area was formerly
covered in mixed bracken, heather, common birch, silver birch trees and some hard woods, mainly oak.
From the 1950's the Heath, then in the ownership of the Whitmore Estate, was developed for residential properties on plots of between three-quarters and almost two acres. Certain covenant standards were specified ensuring the quality of the development as a whole, while leaving the central area for wildlife.
Residents have carefully preserved and enhanced the natural habitat and beauty of the area by planting shrubs and specimen trees, many of which are protected by two Tree Preservation Orders: TPOs Number 57 and 62 were confirmed in 1991.
